This story is the true story of how mind is more powerful than the body. There is no disease which cannot be cured if you keep your attitude happy and positive. Moraitis was a Greek immigrant in the United States. He was one of those many immigrants who had come to pursue an American dream; he had worked hard and built a new life in the “New World.” All was going well and suddenly he was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and told he had only nine months to live in 1976. Cancer sounded like death sentence and he had limited shelf life now.

An aggressive treatment plan was worked out but doctors told him that it wouldn’t save his life. This as well as the high cost of funerals in the United States convinced him to pack his bags and head back to the island of his birth, to spend what he thought would be his final months alive. He moved back to his native Ikaria, a Greek island where he could be buried with his ancestors in a graveyard overlooking the Aegean Sea.

Once he was back to his homeland he chose a different therapy. Nature, his family his community, home grown food— and some good old fashioned wine and he forgot he had cancer and he forgot to die.

All he cared about was his garden, his parents’ vineyards and his homemade wine— not enough, he would say jokingly to be considered an alcoholic— just two or three glasses a day.

.He started working in the untended vineyard during the day, making himself useful, and in the evenings, he’d play dominos with friends. He took a lot of naps, rarely looked at a watch, and spent a lot of time outdoors. He planted vegetables in a garden, basked in sunshine, savoured the salty air, and relished in his love for his wife.

Six months went by and he didn’t die. Not only that— but he felt stronger and his health actually continued to improve. He continued to live his simple but rich life and twenty five years later went back to United States to figure out what had happened to him. He wanted to meet the doctors which had diagnosed him with cancer decades earlier Unfortunately the meeting could not happen as most of the doctors he knew were dead by then.

He ended up living almost 40 years after his doctor-prescribed expiration date. He died peacefully— and not from cancer, on February 3, 2013 at the age of 102.

He continues to be an enigma and inspiration for what heals you, the attitude , the happy approach to things, the simplicity of life style or all the above. When we don’t believe in the disease it leaves us.
